For a few years from now we have seen the game producers more and more worried about the graphics of their games than the actual gameplay. Don't get me wrong, they still are concerned about the gameplay and all the other features of a game but the graphics (especialy now with this new generation of consoles) are gaining importance in relation to the others gaming elements.
Sometimes they even launch a sequel of a game that is the original game with update graphics and some new missions and/or maps.
Or they reinvent an old game with the exactly same gameplay only with better graphics, one example of this is Hereos of Newerth (HON) that is a newer version of the Defense of The Ancients (DotA) map for Warcraft III, the gameplay and some of the hereos of HON is a copy-paste of DotA only with a update on the graphic part, and even the hereos that are diferent most of them are based on old DotA hereos.
In my opinion graphics are important for games, but never should be the main concerning of the game producers, the first thing in mind when creating a game should be the fun of the player, after that's being taken care off then think about graphics, soundtrack, etc
But not every game producer is in this "graphics frenzy", one exemple is Markus Persson a.k.a. Notch the creator of Minecraft (if you want more info on this game I have talk about it and my experiences with it in my personal blog ), this game has very poor (and I mean VERY POOR) graphics, but even with that handicap it's being a sucess, and it's still in beta.
How can a game with graphics from the past century be a sucess in this modern graphic driven world of gaming you ask yourselfs. Well because this game is original and diferent from everything created before, it's a whole new gender of game in my opinion.
And this shows that maybe my opinion that the graphics aren't the most important part of the game is right for some persons besides myself.
