It can become quite difficult when trying to level up quickly in the world of Minecraft. When you first start out, you are going to want to start killing smaller animals such as chickens and pigs.
I suggest making a sword to kill the mobs fast and efficiently. You could either spend your time diggin around aimlessly looking for diamonds, or pick out a minecraft seed that tells you exactly where to go to find certain ores. I suggest looking up a Minecraft list of seedsin google or another search engine, to find a seed that is a good fit for you.
A good seed should have plenty of things near the spawn point, so it's up to you to find one that you like and can begin to build a base on.
Once you have aquired diamond, make some armor and a sword and go out during the day mob hunting. Once you get to a higher level, enchant your sword and armor so you get a better damage count or what not. After you do that you can begin going out at night and killing mobs. You also might want to think about creating a bow to shoot at mobs to reduce the risk of getting hurt.
Keep on the look out for dungeons, especially with a zombies spawner! Zombies tend to be the easiest mobs to kill if you do it effectively, and they drop a hefty bit of experience when you kill them as well. Don't destroy the spawner! Craft the dungeon into an "experience farm" and kill the zombies to gain more experience.
Learn how to make different kinds of potions so you can heal quickly if you do get hurt. If you get too hurt and die, then it is game over and you must start back down at level one, working your way back up. Another thing you want to do is make sure you have plenty of food on you. If you are out in the wild and you notice your hunger bar is all the way down, you will begin losing healt, and the slightest fall of a cliff could kill you!
Be aware of your surroundings when leveling up, and always make sure you have a back up sword at home in a chest! You never know when a Creeper could pop out of nowhere and kill you!
