Starting Your Own Minecraft Server

Most people would have heard of minecraft in one context or another by now, given the game's large and continuously expanding popularity. Since the game's release in the middle of 2009, more and more members of the online community have discovered just how fun and interesting playing Minecraft can be. For players who have been playing Minecraft for some time, starting Minecraft servers represents a whole new dynamic of playability. When starting your own server, however, it is necessary for you to run some kind of administration program, and Minecraft Bukkit is one of the best there is.

Servers exist to allow players to play Minecraft in multiplayer mode, which means that there are other players besides yourself in the Minecraft world. This makes the gameplay much more interesting and complex as you have to compete with others for resources within the game and even defend yourself against attack from other human players, depending on the rules of the particular server that you choose to play on. Many "public" servers are available, which means that they are free to play on and anyone from anywhere in the world is allowed to play on those servers.

Given that there are free servers, why start your own then? One of the main features of running a server is that you are able to dictate the rules of the game to a large extent. On the public servers, you are limited to playing by someone else's rules. On your own server, however, you would get to set those rules yourself. This way, you and your friends can play the game the way you would like to play it.

To start with, in order to create your own server, you will need a computer. This can either be the computer that you are playing on, or a separate computer. Many people recommend that your server be set up on a separate computer, unless your computer is particularly powerful. This is because running the server puts a lot of stress on the computer, and this may interfere with your gameplay if you were to play on that same computer.

Once you have a computer on which to run your server, you will need the program that will create the server and allow players to connect to it and play together. While the creators of Minecraft have released their own server software, that software is bound by a large number of restrictions and players do not have much leeway in the way that the game universe functions.

Minecraft Bukkit is an alternative piece of server software that allows players to create servers with much more discretion when it comes to setting rules and determining how the game should be played. The Minecraft Bukkit software was created and is maintained by members of the Minecraft community, and not by the creators of the game, making it software that was made for gamers, by gamers. This ensures that as a game player yourself, you will likely approach the creation of a Minecraft server from the same perspective and appreciate the options available to you much more than you would in the official server creation software.
